Windows to Fedora

Since Windows 7 it feels as though Microsoft forgot what it is they do.

Skipping over the Windows 8 & 8.1 disaster, Windows 10 looked great in comparison and was actually pretty good for the first few years, but over time it was filled with bloat and the experience was only degraded from there. But despite this i stuck it out with 10 till the bitter end of its life where i then, very reluctantly, moved onto WIndows 11.

Going into 11 i knew it was far more full of unnecesarry crap than 10 ever was, so with my fresh install i used various tools to strip it to the core and try remove any and all traces of crap that was built in. This worked well enough for sometime, but as updates rolled in some of the features like ai co-pilot in the notepad app began creeping back in forcefully.

Enough was enough, after much deliberation and weighing pros & cons, i swapped to Linux, specifically Fedora as it had great out the box support for drivers and other things that meant i would likely spend less time tweaking it endlessly.

Fedora has been great so far, everything is so clean and purpose built, there is no ads or forceful app recomendations as you are free to use whatever you please. The vast majority of my steam library has worked with zero issues and no tweaking which was a surprise. allmost every application i use has a native linux version and ive even come across a few new alternatives suck as “Marknote” to replace windows notes.

Originally i opted to go with Gnome as the desktop enviroment for Fedora and it has worked quite well, but over the last month i have realised i am not the target audience as it caters heavily to multi desktop use and easily switching between different setups. As i run dual monitors i so rarely need this and would prefer to have a more traditional layout, so i intend to swap to KDE instead and trial that for some time.

Overall i have quite enjoyed the switch and the freedom/peace of mind that has come with it.
